DIY OWL COSTUME – The Love Notes Blog

maximios October 6, 2025

How cute is the DIY owl costume!? I made this 2 years ago for Gio, & now it fits Gabi!

When I made this, we lived in Florida, so I got a little creative & wanted to do something that was a full body outfit. The hood & cape are both detachable by snaps so the onesie can be easily worn without them if it’s hot– not exactly the same effect, but I like having the different options. You can also add tights or leggings with this, too!

How cute are the little pleater shoe covers?! All the heart eyes!

The greatest part about this DIY was that I spent $0 on it because I had all the fabric. Doesn’t get better than that!

In theory, it’s a simple DIY.. it just takes time & patience. Using a hot glue gun to adhere the feathers probably would’ve been easier & faster but I didn’t know if the glue was going to be uncomfortable through the onesie so I just decided to sew them on or you could look into a wide selection at Customized Wear.

Here’s what I used:

  • Black, brown, gray & white felt. I actually had dark gray fleece I used for the cape & feathers, too.
  • Gray onesie
  • Gray beanie
  • Brown pleather
  • Elastic
  • Snaps, buttons or velcro
  • Suitable materials from custom caps store for the hats.

What I did:

Cut out the felt feathers. (I didn’t end up using the tan, which you see cut in the top left corner)

Start at the bottom & work your way up, sewing (or gluing) a line of feathers overlapping each other.

It took me a few rows to realize it was very necessary to pin the feathers in place. Ugh, I HATE pinning!

Continue this all the way up the onesie.

You’ll see it stretched out my onesie a bit, which was fine because the onesie I had was a small on Gio. But keep that in mind!

I wanted the feathers to go all the way up to the top so I cut them to fit around the neck.

I added feathers to one sleeve & then removed them, they looked too bulky to me. So I started on the wing cape by cutting out gray fleece, folding over the top & sewing it so there wasn’t a raw edge. You’ll see in the picture below this next one that I actually ended up trimming the bottom & sides a bit to make it more of a rounded V shape than a U shape.

Do exactly what you did with the onesie– start at the bottom & work your way up. I left the middle section undone since the feathers would be covered by his body anyway. It was less work & I figured it would be lighter. I realized about 1/2 into it that I hadn’t used any of the light grey feathers so I left that color off this side so it didn’t look uneven.

For the back, do the same thing as the front. Start at the bottom & work your way up. Make sure before you pin & sew, push the feathers up on the other side so they don’t get sewn down/sewn over! Does that make sense?

The next part of the cape is sewing on wrist bands so they stay on. I used fleece since it has a bit of stretch & figured it would be more comfortable but you could also use elastic. Sew a zigzag stitch to make sure they stay put. Here’s a pic of them sewn on the top, then I folded them down & sewed it right over the feathers. I ended up adding one more row of feathers at the top (on both sides), I wasn’t a fan of that empty grey stripe.

I wanted to use snaps to keep the cape on the onesie, but you could use buttons or velcro as well. I put the snaps on the top of the onesie first then lined the onesie up with the cape, marked where they needed to be & put them in the corresponding spots on the cape.

Next are the shoe covers. I totally winged this part but it somehow worked. Trace around your child’s shoe & leave a bit of room for seam allowance.

Sew the back & front together using a zig zag stitch.

img_5927-1024x686-9237141

The front & back fit perfectly, but the top was weird so I used these nifty sewing clips to get it to the exact shape. Then I used those as a guide to sew the top.

This is what they looked like over the shoe.

I wanted to add talons so I shaped the pleather to the top of the shoe & cut out the shape.

Next, it’s time to sew the two pieces of pleather together & put elastic on the bottom so they stay on the shoes. I drew a line on the elastic where the outside of the shoe was & marked the pleather so I knew where to sew it. I zigzag stitched them together & added another elastic strip closer to the toe of the shoe to keep them on even more securely.

I made a beanie with eyes & a beak that he REF– USED to keep on. I may or may not have bribed him with fruit snacks to keep in on for one picture, but he won that battle, haha. I decided I’d add a detachable hood to the cape where I could put the eyes & beak instead– I figured he wouldn’t mind that as much & I was right. He didn’t exactly love it, but he did keep it on.

I used the hood of a jacket as a guide, making dots with a Sharpie near the edge for seam allowance.

Cut & sew the pieces together, then flip & sew the raw edge. I cut out white, black & grey circles for the eyes, then 3 triangles for little ears & a beak.

I then added 5 snaps along the bottom so it could be attached to the cape

& here’s my little owl!

I feel like I could add some feathers to the hood but we’ll see if I get around to it before tomorrow… Haha.

Thanks for stopping by!! If you’re looking for more costume inspiration, check out my DIY turtle costume!

Sensory Play Activity with Flowers in the Sensory Bin

maximios September 16, 2025

I love our sensory table— it was actually a DIY project that I did years ago, & we love it! You can see how I made our DIY sensory table here.

I’m always looking for new things to put in our sensory table— we do things like rice, beans, sand, water & oatmeal pretty frequently. If I’m out of ideas (or I don’t want to clean up the mess that Gabi inevitably makes– her sand-throwing hands are out of control, you guys, haha.) I’ll hop on Pinterest  & look for something low maintenance. I saw a cute pin with Spring Sensory Table Ideas– it had a picture of a little garden setup, with faux flowers, dirt & rocks. & I had a bouquet of flowers that didn’t have much longer, so I figured why not get some use out of it & create a learning experience in the table?

I threw in some shovels so they could dig around & scoop up the pieces. Gabi was interested in pulling off all the petals & tearing them into the tiniest pieces she possibly could, haha. Which gave me the idea to let Gio practice with some scissors. He cut things up, with some help & guidance from me,  & they both just sat quietly, exploring :)Gabi examined the flowers, one-by-one.  I love watching her marvel at something I see as ordinary or don’t think twice about. It makes me stop & realize the beauty in things I may just otherwise walk right by.I also love seeing these two, happily playing & learning together with nothing more than a bit of nature 🙂 It just goes to show you don’t need a fancy game or technology to hold their attention. Just throw some flowers in a bin & let them have at it!

Do you have a sensory table?  What’s your favorite thing to put in it? I’d love to know!

Fun Rainbow Activity for Kids

maximios September 9, 2025

I super last minute threw together some St. Patricks’s Day activities & I figured I’d share them with you guys! I made 2 printable rainbow activities for kids & 2 treat bag toppers, free for the takin’:

The printable activities can be used with a few different supplies:

  • Froot Loops
  • Dot markers
  • Pom poms

These rainbow printable activities help fine motor skills as well as sorting skills. Sorting activities allow children to gain the understanding that things are alike & different, and can be organized & grouped. Sorting also helps children learn how to apply logical thinking to objects, mathematical concepts & everyday life.

These are easy, child directed activities that you can pull out for a few quiet moments when you’re trying to get dinner ready… or you just need a few quiet moments. Haha. Gio definitely preferred the Froot Loops over the pom poms. I wonder why, haha!

You could also use dot markers in place of the Froot Loops or pom poms. Put them in plastic sheet protectors or get them laminated so you can wipe them clean and reuse them!

The treat bag toppers can be printed, cut & stapled to snack bags filled with skittles for a St. Patrick’s Day treat 🙂 I sell these in my Etsy shop but you can get them delivered right to your email! Just sign up with the form below, you’ll get an email to confirm you want the printables & they’ll be sent right to your inbox where you can print them as many times as you want! You’re welcome 🙂 Xo, Kristen

Make Your Own Ice Ornaments! – The Love Notes Blog

maximios September 9, 2025

I saw this post on Pinterest & I had to give it a try– DIY Ice Ornaments! We love a good craft around here, & I love that this one uses items from nature. Read on to see what items we used & learn how to to make your own ornaments.

The first step is to gather the items you want to use for the ornaments. We used:

  • lemons
  • limes
  • oranges
  • pine tree sprigs
  • cranberries
  • plates/ramekins
  • string

You’ll also need various containers to use as molds for your ice ornaments. We used plates & ramekins, but you can experiment with any dishes you may have. The last thing you’ll need is string, if you want to hang them like we did.

We started out by arranging the items in the dishes. The kids had fun making different designs with the materials. Once you have everything arranged the way you want, pour water onto your plate or container. You want to make sure you have enough water to freeze all of the items, but keep in mind the items may float away if you add too much!

After the water was added, we placed string for each of the ornaments, making sure to add string to each section of the plates that had dividers.

3. Freeze them!

Next, we carried our plates outside onto our patio wall so they could freeze, but if you live in a warm place you could put them in your freezer. We did have to replace some water in the plates that were more shallow when water may have spilled out.

We let them sit overnight & they were ready when I got home from work the next day! Gabi couldn’t wait to hang them up & decorate the trees in our yard.

4. Hang your ornaments

Now it’s time to hang your ornaments & decorate your trees! Gabi carefully chose spots for each ornament. She loved hanging them & was so proud of her work!

These DIY Ice Ornaments were such a fun & easy activity. It didn’t take much time to set up, and Gabi stayed engaged through the whole process. I recommend you try to make your own! Give us a tag on IG @thelovenotes if you do! 🙂

Holiday Dessert for Kids: Reindeer Brownies – The Love Notes Blog

maximios September 9, 2025

How cute are these reindeer brownies! If you love brownies, you’ll love this adorable take on a classic. A lot of you know we just closed on a new house last week. We’ve been soooo busy unpacking & trying to make this house a home that we haven’t had much time to do holiday projects– we don’t even have a tree, haha. I remembered seeing these adorable reindeer brownies on Pinterest (where else?) & decided we were going to take a break from all the housework & make them this morning! They’re super easy & would be a great Christmas treat 🙂

I went suuuuuper simple & grabbed boxed brownies. Ain’t no shame! Ghirardelli is my favorite brand, so I went with that. Here’s everything I used to make the reindeer brownies:

  • Boxed brownies
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • 1 Egg
  • Writing icing
  • Mini chocolate chips OR edible eyes
  • m&ms
  • Pretzels

Directions:

Combine ingredients and bake according to box instructions. Decorate with chocolate chips, m&m’s & pretzels.

Gio LOVES baking & helping me in the kitchen, so I let him pour in the ingredients & mix everything up.

He gets so serious when he’s concentrating, haha.

Directions:

  1. Pour your batter into a round pan, bake according to the box (or according to your recipe) & let them cool for a bit.
  2. When the brownies are still just a little bit warm, break up some pretzels & use the longer pieces as antlers for your reindeer. I always have a hard time cutting brownies when they haven’t cooled completely so I just mapped out where I was going to cut so I knew where to put my pretzels.
  3. Once the brownies are completely cooled, you can cut your brownies & finish the decorating.

The next part was Gio’s favorite– sorting (& eating) m&ms. I told him we needed 8 red ones for our Rudolph noses, so he found those & set them aside.

He tested some to make sure they were good enough. He approved.

Add dots of white icing for the eyes, completing them with mini chocolate chips on top. It would’ve been much easier to just use edible eyes but I couldn’t find them in our grocery store so we improvised. Finally, add a red m&m for the nose by putting a dot of icing at the point of the brownie to hold it in place.

Here’s what our finished product looked like. The eyes came out a little wonky on these reindeer brownies, but they’re still cute!

Such an easy holiday treat & the kids will love them 🙂
